Glossary

Density

Lbs. per cubic foot (1.7-lb. density foam means 1 cubic foot weighs 1.7 lbs.)

IFD (Indention Force Deflection)

Measures the firmness of foam and is independent of foam density. IFD is measured by indenting (compressing) a foam sample to 25% of its original height. The amount of force in lbs. required is its Indention Load Deflection (see ILD). The more force required, the firmer the foam. Open-cell foam IFDs usually range from 10 IFD (super soft) to 100 IFD (very firm).

ILD (Indention Load Deflection)

Also measures foam firmness. It is the amount of force in lbs. required to compress (indent) a foam sample to 25% of its original height. The higher the ILD, the firmer the foam. A 10-ILD open-cell foam is super soft whereas a 100-ILD foam is very firm.

Phthalates

Chemical plasticizers used to soften plastics, which are continuously released from the products to which they are added (not environmentally friendly).

Mat & Padding Fabrics

  • Tear-resistant, phthalate-free PVC-coated shells with high UV, flame resistance and antibacterial formulations can take the most rugged indoor and outdoor wear.
  • All indoor mats and wall padding meet all fire codes including NFPA 701, California Fire Marshall and UL.
  • Unlike laminated fabrics that tend to peel, these vinyl covers are coated into one homogeneous layer of PVC and polyester.
